It is the opinions of our own which make us stupid; when we are simple we are never stupid, we discern all the time. Philip expected the revelation of a tremendous mystery, but not in the One Whom he knew. The mystery of God is not in what is going to be, it is now; we look for it presently, in some cataclysmic event. We have no reluctance in obeying Jesus, but it is probable that we are hurting Him by the questions we ask. “Lord, show us the Father. His answer comes straight back–“There He is, always here or nowhere”. We look for God to manifest Himself to His children; God only manifests Himself in His children. –Oswald Chambers, Utmost for His Highest
You see, a flashlight does not gaze upon it’s own beam. It is a light. We go around looking for the light, when we are the torch through which that light is shining. We beg God to show up when He is already here. The problem is not that He is not “there for us”, it’s that we want a show. We have our own notions. We seek great things for ourselves. Still seeking the gifts instead of the giver. We want God to do “big things”, perform like a circus monkey and (ostensibly) show everybody the “great God we serve” when really, we are wanting to show them what a “Great God serves me”. Because we are still holding our own agenda.
We never really experience the fullness of life God desires for us until we are completely abandoned to Him, with the life that is hid with Christ in God. Am I prepared to abandon entirely? To let go? To forego the privilege of asking questions? See, if what I want is control of the outcome, then He will not determine and bring about the best outcome He wants for me. He will give me my vote in the matter and I will always be settling for the consolation prize. Surrendering fully with “whatever you want is fine with me, Lord” is the way to have “no worries”. I cannot lose. He will never shortchange me. You see, the life hidden in Christ is like walking through a doorway. Once I walk across that threshold, my agenda and I “are no more”. For me to live is Christ. When people look at me, all they should see is Jesus. God is not actually concerned with making me happy and blessed. His ideal for me is that we may be “One” as He and the Father are one. If I am not there yet, it is either due to disobedience, or refusal to be made simple. Is Galations 2:20 true in me, really?
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Seekest thou great things for thyself? Jeremiah 45:5
