Why Do the Heathen Rage, and the People Imagine a Vain Thing?

Psalm 2 (KJV)

1Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision. 5Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Have you ever found yourself in a new group of people, perhaps in a new job, school, civic group, and as a newcomer you noticed there was one individual who is frequently ill-spoken of by the others, only to discover upon getting to know the “outcast” fellow for yourself, that the others had pegged him all wrong?

A lot of people do that with God.  Instead of getting to know the true God through His own Words, they imagine a different version of Him altogether, and then set themselves against this imagined god.  Perhaps that is why the Bible repeatedly warns us to cast down “vain imaginations”.

What the raging heathens have vainly imagined is that they have successfully thrown off the “bands and cords of God’s law and authority.  The heathen people (mankind), the kings and rulers of the earth, all through the ages and today’s presidents, prime ministers, judges, the lofty intellectuals of science (falsely so-called) and the lawmakers.

As David writes this psalm he is incredulous that these are so self-deluded as to believe they have escaped the authority of the God who holds creation in the palm of His hand.  Who believe they have hijacked that world and even now are in control of it.

God’s reaction?

God sits in the heavens and laughs.

I’m sure He does the same when the world’s “best and brightest” discuss the big bang theory with a straight face.   The minds which decoded the genome,  the minds which put rockets into space, willfully subscribe to and teach that “in the beginning, there was nothing, and it exploded, and became “all of this”.

Romans 1:18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

The fool saith in his heart “there is no God”.  Leviticus 22:1   and  2 Peter3: 5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

There is no such thing as an atheist! Every man knows there is a God–willful ignorance and foolishness notwithstanding.
